Several Jäähy customers have recently brought in belongings from self-storage units because of clothes moth infestations. Some rugs were already beyond repair. Learn how to protect stored belongings, recognise moth damage and eliminate pests through professional freezing.

Clothes Moths Found in a Storage Unit – and the Rugs Were Already Ruined

Have you rented a self-storage unit for furniture, rugs, clothing or other household belongings? It seems like an ideal solution: your possessions stay safely out of the way until you need them again. But what happens if clothes moths begin breeding among your stored belongings and nobody notices the problem in time?

At Jäähy, we have recently encountered a worrying pattern. Within approximately one month, several customers have brought us belongings that had been stored in rented storage units. In all these cases, the problem involved clothes moths.

For some customers, clothes moth larvae had already damaged their rugs so severely that they could no longer be saved.

The damage was extensive, with so many holes that simple repairs were no longer an option. These real customer experiences demonstrate that belongings are not necessarily safe from pests simply because the storage unit is locked.

Why Can Clothes Moth Infestations Go Unnoticed in Self-Storage Units?

One of the biggest problems with self-storage units and other long-term storage facilities is that stored belongings are not inspected regularly. A rug, woollen jumper or piece of furniture may remain untouched for months or even years. During this time, clothes moth larvae can develop in sheltered areas where they are difficult to detect.

The following situations can increase the risk:

  • Rugs and clothing are placed into storage without being cleaned first.
  • Wool rugs are rolled up without appropriate protective packaging.
  • Textiles are stored in open boxes or uncovered piles.
  • Belongings remain in storage for long periods without inspections.
  • Early signs of insects or textile damage go unnoticed.

Of course, not every storage unit has a pest problem. Insects may also arrive inside belongings that were already infested before being placed into storage. Finding clothes moths in a rented storage unit does not, by itself, establish where the infestation originated.

The important point is that unprotected belongings left unchecked for long periods can suffer serious damage.

Why Do Clothes Moths Damage Wool Rugs?

The larvae of clothes moths feed primarily on materials containing animal-derived fibres. Wool rugs, woollen clothing, fur and other textiles containing keratin can therefore become food sources. Adult moths are not usually responsible for eating holes in carpets or clothing; the larvae cause the damage. Larvae may hide among rug fibres, folds and other sheltered areas. Damage can remain concealed, especially when a rug is rolled up or covered by other belongings. When the rug is finally unrolled, the owner may discover irregular holes, worn patches and areas where fibres have disappeared. In severe cases, the damage may be so extensive that restoring the rug is no longer practical or economically worthwhile.

Jäähy's first-hand experience:

We have recently treated belongings from several self-storage customers because of clothes moth infestations. In some cases, the rugs were already so badly damaged that freezing could not have restored them.

Freezing eliminates the target pests in properly treated belongings, but it cannot repair holes already eaten by larvae.

How Can You Recognise Clothes Moths and Their Damage?

The first signs of a clothes moth infestation can be surprisingly subtle.

Look out for:

  • Small, pale yellow or golden-brown moths
  • Pale larvae with darker heads among textiles
  • Irregular holes in woollen clothing or rugs
  • Fine silk-like webbing or protective larval cases
  • Damage underneath rugs, along edges and inside folds

However, a hole in a textile does not automatically mean that clothes moths are responsible. Carpet beetle larvae can cause similar damage.

How Should You Protect Rugs, Clothing and Furniture in Storage?

The best way to avoid extensive damage is to prepare and protect your belongings before placing them into storage.

1. Clean Textiles Before Storage

Do not put dirty woollen clothing, rugs or other delicate textiles into long-term storage without appropriate cleaning. Food stains, perspiration, pet hair and other contamination may make certain textiles more attractive to pests. Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions. For valuable wool rugs, professional rug cleaning may be a sensible precaution.

2. Protect Rugs and Clothing Properly

Clean, dry textiles should be stored in packaging that is suitable for the material and provides protection against insects. Properly sealed storage containers and protective garment bags can help prevent pests from reaching your belongings. For rugs, the packaging method must be selected according to the material and storage conditions. Avoid trapping moisture inside the packaging, as this may cause other types of damage. Valuable rugs may require specialist storage advice.

3. Inspect Your Storage Unit Regularly

Do not leave your stored belongings completely unattended. Inspect their condition regularly, paying particular attention to wool rugs, clothing and other products containing animal-derived fibres. Remember that clothes moth larvae can hide in areas that are not immediately visible.

4. Inspect Second-Hand Belongings Before Storing Them

Textiles acquired from second-hand shops, inherited estates or other storage facilities should be checked before being placed alongside your existing belongings. Even a single infested item can introduce pests into a new storage environment.

5. Consider Preventive Freezing Treatment

If you suspect that your belongings have been exposed to clothes moths or other pests, professional freezing before long-term storage may be a sensible precaution. Jäähy can treat many types of suitable textiles, rugs, clothing and furniture. Correct packaging and pest-protected storage after treatment help prevent reinfestation.

What Should You Do If You Find Clothes Moths in a Storage Unit?

If you discover clothes moths, larvae or damaged rugs in your storage unit, your priority should be to prevent the infestation from spreading.

  1. Do not take unprotected belongings straight home. Live pests or their eggs may be transported with them.
  2. Assess the extent of the problem. Inspect wool rugs, clothing, blankets and other vulnerable textiles.
  3. Photograph insects and damage. Photographs may help identify the pest and document losses for possible compensation claims.
  4. Inform the storage facility operator. The condition of the storage unit and any need for pest control should also be investigated.
  5. Protect belongings during transportation. Follow Jäähy's packaging and transport instructions to prevent insects from spreading.
  6. Treat belongings worth keeping. Professional freezing eliminates target pests in items that are suitable for treatment.

Do not return treated belongings to an infested storage unit.

If clothes moths or their larvae are still present, the belongings may become infested again. Before returning your items, make sure the storage facility's pest problem has been investigated and appropriately controlled.

Can a Rug Damaged by Clothes Moths Be Saved?

That depends on how extensive the damage has become. If live clothes moth larvae or other target pests are still present, professional freezing can stop them from causing further damage to the treated rug. However, freezing cannot replace fibres that have already been eaten or repair existing holes. Minor damage may sometimes be repaired by a specialist rug restorer, but heavily damaged rugs cannot always be restored.

This is why it is important to act as soon as the first signs appear, rather than waiting until valuable rugs are beyond repair.

When an Entire Storage Unit Needs Treatment – Container Freezing May Be the Best Solution

If clothes moths have been discovered in several rugs, pieces of furniture or other belongings, treating each item separately may not be the most practical solution. When a whole storage unit's contents need treatment, Jäähy's freezing container can offer an effective and economically sensible option. Our freezing container has a capacity of 12.5 cubic metres and can accommodate substantial quantities of suitable household belongings, including rugs, packed textiles, furniture and moving boxes.

The purpose of container freezing is to save usable belongings from pests rather than having to dispose of everything.

Frequently Asked Questions About Clothes Moths in Self-Storage Units
